Welcome to The Epic 80s, my personal project dedicated to the greatest decade of all time. If you didn't grow up in the 80s, you may be asking yourself what made this decade so special. Well, where shall I start?
We saw the rise of MTV and a diverse music scene that launched the careers of Madonna, Whitney Houston, Prince and Michael Jackson as a solo artist. It was also the decade of the one-hit-wonder with bands such as Kajagoogoo, Dexys Midnight Runners and T'Pau all charting with hit songs.
Indiana Jones took us along on his amazing journeys, John Hughes showed us that our teenage struggles were universal and Michael J Fox took us Back to the Future in cinematic adventures. Drive-Ins were plentiful and concessions stands reasonably priced.
Yuppies embraced consumerism while the punk movement rebelled against cultural norms. Valley Girls moved beyond the San Fernando Valley into the mainstream and hair bands ruled the airwaves.
Our fashions were colorful as were our cosmetics and vibrant hair colors began to emerge. Jelly bracelets were all the rage and jelly shoes made our feet miserable. Nothing came between Brooke Shields and her Calvins and we zipped our Jordache jeans up with pliers. The higher the hair the closer to God became a motto we lived and breathed by.
It was a wondrous time to be alive!
As great as the 80's were, we still had our struggles. Reagan's Trickle Down Economics never seemed to trickle down quite far enough and the country went into a deep recession. Crack cocaine became an epidemic and a mysterious new illness known as AIDS wreaked havoc across the nation. We lived under a growing threat of nuclear war and began to experience an ever-widening gap between the socio-economic classes. Yet through it all, we partied like it was 1999 while we drank our wine coolers and smoked Marlboro Reds. Yes indeed, the 80s were a special time!
I look back upon the decade with many fond memories. My first sleepover party, my first slow dance, my first boy-girl party and my first kiss. So many memories packed into 10 short years.
I embark on this project as a way for those of us who grew up during this decade of decadence to reminisce together and share our memories while helping to educate the younger generations of our youth. I will be creating an online magazine with each issue being dedicated to a different month for a total of 120 issues packed with fun, informative articles. There will be a podcast, YouTube channel, TikTok account and Facebook page where anyone is welcome to follow along for more content and interact with myself and other followers. There will be polls, discussions and giveaways. I am hoping to become your home for all things 80s. The fashion, the entertainment, the politics-no stone will be left unturned! So please, join me on my adventures down memory lane in this trip I call The Epic 80s!
