National Bat Appreciation Month: Honoring Bats and Batman

Who knew that creatures that hang upside down could inspire a cultural icon? Or a month-long holiday? October is National Bat Appreciation Month—a time to celebrate one of nature’s most misunderstood animals. Bats play vital roles in our ecosystems, from pollinating plants to keeping insect populations in check. But they’ve also inspired one of the most iconic superheroes of all time: Batman.

The 1980s brought Batman to the big screen like never before. Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman, starring Michael Keaton, transformed the hero into a dark, brooding vigilante, far from the colorful camp of the 1960s. Jack Nicholson’s Joker added chaos and flair, creating a cinematic clash that captivated audiences. The film’s gothic visuals, eerie music, and intense atmosphere redefined superhero movies and proved that Batman could be both thrilling and sophisticated.

National Bat Appreciation Month is the perfect time to honor the real bats that protect our environment—and the cinematic bats that have captured our imaginations. Thanks to the 1980s Batman, we remember that bats, in all their forms, are mysterious, powerful, and endlessly fascinating.
If you would like to celebrate bats AND Batman this month, I suggest stocking up on popcorn and sodas and enjoying a Batman Marathon featuring Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney wearing their Batman best! And stay tuned for a Please Be Kind, Rewind Review of the 1989 Batman movie later this month.
