The Most Dangerous Toys We Played With in the 80s (And Somehow Survived)

With December being the biggest gift-giving month of the year, it should come as no surprise that it also happens to be Safe Toys and Gifts Month. Let's take a look back at some 80's toys that would never make the grade today!

The 1980s gave us neon socks, Saturday morning cartoons, and some of the most questionable toys ever to hit store shelves. Safety regulations weren’t quite what they are today, and many of the toys we begged for as kids came with a generous helping of danger: sharp edges, questionable chemicals, high speeds, or just plain bad ideas. Here’s a look back at the toys that turned us into the resilient adults we are today… or at least gave us some memorable scars.

1. Lawn Darts (a.k.a. Jarts) Nothing says family fun like heavy metal spears thrown high into the air toward a plastic ring. These darts caused thousands of injuries and several fatalities before finally being banned. But if you grew up in the 80s, chances are you played with them barefoot in the backyard.

2. The Easy-Bake Oven (Original Metal Version) The idea was magical, bake tiny cakes with a lightbulb! The reality? Many kids learned the hard way that the inside of that oven reached skin-searing temperatures. Getting your hand stuck in the oven slot was practically a rite of passage.

3. Slip ’N Slides On TV, kids glided gracefully across a perfectly wet slide. In real life, we launched ourselves down a thin sheet of plastic on unforgiving grass, hard dirt, and sometimes hidden rocks. Adults were definitely not supposed to use it… but they did, and ER visits followed.

4. Pogo Balls Remember these? A rubber ball in the middle of a plastic disc you stood on. The problem was you needed the balance of a circus performer to use it. Most of us jumped twice, spun awkwardly, and face-planted into the pavement.

5. Clackers Two acrylic balls on strings that you swung up and down until they smacked together, making a clacking sound. Unfortunately, those acrylic balls sometimes exploded on impact, sending sharp shards flying like tiny grenades.

6. Big Wheels on Steep Hills Big Wheels were mostly safe on flat driveways. But 80's kids didn’t do flat. We sought out the steepest hill in the neighborhood and rode down at speeds that no adult would approve of. No brakes. No helmets. Only adrenaline and bad decisions. If there were no hills to be found, we would make ramps out of plyboard and cinder blocks.

7. Chemistry Sets Some kits included real alcohol burners, powdered chemicals, and the opportunity for small-scale explosions. We mixed things together with no idea what would happen. Sometimes nothing, sometimes smoke, and once in a while, a panicked parent running in.

8. The “Atomic Energy Lab” (Earlier but still around in some forms) While technically a 50's relic, variations of radioactive science kits stuck around in collections and hand-me-down boxes. Nothing like gifting kids actual radioactive material to spark their curiosity… and concern.

9. Metal-Tipped Arrows, Cap Guns, and Other “Outdoor Adventure Gear” Most 80's kids had some sort of pretend weapon. Cap guns with loud explosive caps, bow-and-arrow sets with surprisingly sharp tips, or slingshots that definitely weren’t toys—all of it contributed to the “be home by dinner” school of parenting.

Honorable Mention: 7. Candy Cigarettes Okay, maybe not “dangerous,”  or a toy, but unquestionably questionable. These chalky sugar sticks encouraged kids to practice smoking while pretending to be “cool.” Nothing quite like teaching 6-year-olds to imitate inhaling something unhealthy.

And yet, somehow we survived...

Looking back, it’s amazing how many classic 80's toys would never pass today’s safety standards. But part of growing up in the 80s was the freedom (and occasional danger) that came with all these iconic toys. We climbed high, played rough, and learned a lot through trial, error, and a bottle of Bactine.
